What are propane and LPG?
While most of us don't generally use propane, if you live in a remote area without access to city gas, you may need it to heat your home. Like butane, propane is often called liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Butane is more often used indoors while propane is more frequently used outdoors because it can boil at extremely low temperatures.
Liquid petroleum gas, sometimes referred to as LPG, is a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. Although LPG is technically a generic term for many gases, including propane, butane, propylene, butadiene, butylene and isobutylene, the terms propane and LPG are sometimes used interchangeably.
Although propane and LPG are more affordable than gasoline or diesel, they require more storage space for the same amount of energy because they release less energy.
The most common type of LPG, propane, is usually compressed and stored in liquid form. It is virtually odorless, colorless and non-toxic. As with gas, an odor is added to make it easier to detect. Propane is often used in commercial vehicles, industrial equipment and heating systems. It is sometimes called propane autogas when used as a transportation fuel.

Compared to gasoline or diesel, is propane cleaner?
If you're looking for a more environmentally friendly fuel, propane offers the following advantages over gasoline, oil and diesel:
- Because it emits less carbon dioxide when burned than gasoline, diesel or other fuels, propane is cleaner than them.
- It does not release waste gases such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides or methane and is not dangerous to breathe.
- Propane evaporates to produce a harmless vapor, so it has no negative effect on soil, groundwater, freshwater or seawater.
However, since propane is a byproduct of gas and gasoline manufacturing, it is ultimately difficult to see how it can be considered a green fuel.
